I have a special friend that is making a custom chess set for their friend for this Christmas, but she was wondering what she was going to do for a chess board.
I thought I could help! I have a piece of oak that was from a table that was left in the old farmhouse in Jefferson County CO. the same farmhouse where my workshop is located now.
Could you imagine? Once a sturdy oak, this piece of wood was hewn into a table, finding its place in an old farmhouse. It witnessed families gather for hearty meals, laughter echoing through the rooms. Across decades, it bore witness to tales spun by grandparents, shared secrets between siblings, and the worn-out yet cherished touch of children’s hands during crafts and homework. Over time, it saw the seasons change through the windows, silently observing the dance of sunlight and shadows. It weathered spills, scratches, and repairs, each mark telling a story of its own. As the farmhouse stood witness to life’s ebb and flow, this piece of wood remained a steadfast witness to the passage of time, holding within its grain the memories of generations gone by. I only honor it by making use of it for other purposes!
I had to buy a small piece of walnut to complement the white Oak.. But you know, I think it turned out really nice.
I mounted it on a small wooden box where the pieces can be stored. Made out of pine, and with box joinery.
Im happy with the results. 🙂
